There is a refreshing and unusual range here, sharpening the anthology's tone and linking American, Jewish, Chinese, African-American, Irish and British writers. Some of the names which seem to crop up in almost every anthology have been omitted, and this makes room for lesser-known voices. Even the pieces by well-known writers such as Sylvia Plath and Virginia Woolf are not those that keep doing the rounds, and provide a fresh insight into the writers' lives and works. A beautiful collection of fiction, non-fiction and poetry ... Ingman gives wonderful descriptions of the intellectual and social context of the time ... Heather Ingman's anthology is sure to be welcomed not only by specialists, but also by students and general readers, be they mothers, or daughters, or neither.
