Kim Christiaens is director of KADOC-KU Leuven, Documentation and Research Centre on Religion, Culture and Society and professor of contemporary history at KU Leuven. Idesbald Goddeeris is professor of colonial history at the research unit MoSa (Modernity and Society, 1800-2000), KU Leuven. Dass auf ein abschliessendes bzw. vorangestelltes vergleichendes Fazit verzichtet wird, mag für eine transnationale Studie erstaunen, ist aber für einen so breit gefächerten Sammelband nicht atypisch. Der Verzicht ist dem Buch anzurechnen. Es versteht sich zurecht als «multi-coloured kaleidoscope» (S. 21), das sowohl den Themen und Perspektiven der AutorInnen wie deren geografisch unterschiedlichen Forschungsgegenständen gerecht wird. Die einzige Konklusion betrifft also das Hervorheben der Diversität und der Notwendigkeit der Differenzierung. In diesem Sinne ist die Verbindung der Artikel unter dem Dach des Bandes Missionary Education stimmig. Er zeigt die verknüpften Möglichkeiten der Vergangenheit, Geschichte und Geschichtswissenschaft mustergültig auf. Eine Leseempfehlung ist schliesslich für all jene ForscherInnen auszusprechen, die sich mit Missions- oder globaler Bildungsgeschichte beschäftigen. Durch die thematische Vielfalt und die reflektierte Kontingenz der Erkenntnisse ist die Chance gegeben, dass sich für die meisten einschlägigen Forschungszusammenhänge mindestens ein inspirierender Aufsatz findet.
