This work focuses on the issues of migration, welfare and unemployment in a trade and development framework. Several chapters of the book analyze the implications of internal labour mobility in a model designed to highlight its implications for regional welfare, urban unemployment, rural-urban dichotomy and structural adjustment. An important innovation in this work is the disaggregation of the economy and the use of separate utility functions to highlight non-homogeneity of preferences. The book also deals with international mobility of factors in different frameworks. In particular it concentrates on the emotive issue of legal and illegal migration. Thus this work incorporates features of labour economics and factor mobility into trade and distortion theory.

'The interaction between factor mobility and trade has been a long standing concern to several of the best trade theorists and also to policy makers. Despite the huge scholarly literature that has grown up on this subject in the last four decades, these distinguished authors manage to bring fresh theoretical insights to the subject. It is a first-rate work.' Jagdish N. Bhagwati, Columbia University, New York 'This excellent book is a welcome addition to international trade books, where factor mobility and trade in factors are usually given a cursory treatment. In fact, after an introductory chapter in which the orthodox theory is summarized, the subsequent chapters treat a wealth of topics related to factor mobility and trade in factors including situations of unemployment and legal and illegal migration issues.' Giancarlo Gandolfo, University of Rome La Sapienza
