Med hjälp av modern kosmologi och den filosofiska spjutspetsforskningen om medvetandet argumenterar den brittiske filosofen Philip Goff för idén om ett kosmiskt syfte: universum har verkliga mål, bland annat att utveckla liv. Enligt Goff har såväl de religiösa som vetenskapliga berättelserna om universum stora brister. Istället presenterar han ett nytt filosofiskt program – en sorts kompromiss mellan naturvetenskaplig ateism och religiösa förklaringsmodeller som skänker hopp, inspiration och nyfikenhet.
