In 1943, during the German occupation of France, Rheinhardt was arrested and then in 1944 deported to Dachau concentration camp, where he died shortly before the liberation. A few years ago the historian Dominique Lassaigne discovered his prison diary, which had been believed lost. Rheinhardt’s notes from the Gestapo prisons bear witness to a long-forgotten humanist who believed in the peacemaking power of culture.
