After disastrous defeats at the hands of the Mongols in the 13th century, the Russian principalities became vassals of the Khans of the Golden Horde for more then 200 years.At the same time the western princes faced the German crusaders of the Teutonic Order. Remarkably, Russia responded with a new surge of military vigour. Eventually, freedom from the 'Mongol yoke' coincided with a degree of unity around a powerful new state - Muscovy. Viacheslav Shpakovsky is Assistant Professor and Chief Historical Scientist in the History Department of Penza University in Penza, Russia. He has also written a number of articles on various aspects of Russian and military history for both academic journals and popular magazines in Russia. Dr David Nicolle is Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of Medieval Studies, Nottingham University. He is the author of numerous books on aspects of medieval military history, including many for Osprey, and is a specialist in medieval arms and armour.Angus McBride was one of the world's most respected historical illustrators, and contributed to over 100 Osprey titles over several decades.
