MICHAEL BUTLER is Professor of Modern German Literature at the University of Birmingham. His books include The Novels of Max Frisch, Rejection and Emancipation, Writing in German-Speaking Switzerland 1945-1991 and he is editor of The Narrative Fiction of Heinrich Bvll, Social Conscience and Literary Achievement. - MALCOLM PENDER is Professor of German Studies at the University of Strathclyde. His books include Max Frisch: His Work and its Swiss Background, and he is co-editor of a new series, Occasional Papers in Swiss Studies - JOY CHARNLEY is Lecturer in French at the University of Strathclyde. Her recent publications include Pierre Bayle: Reader of Travel Literature and (as editor) 25 Years Emancipation? Women in Switzerland 1971-1996. She is co-editor of a new series, Occasional Papers in Swiss Studies.
