Shortlisted for Urban Design Group Publishers Award 2011 'Wise, insightful and thoroughly grounded in the complex realities of planning practice, Making Better Places will be read with pleasure by practicing planners everywhere. It will also be ideal for the classroom and I recommend it very highly - and intend to use it myself - for both undergraduate and graduate courses.' - Karen Christensen, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of City and Regional Planning, University of California, Berkeley, USA 'This major new text by one of the world's most influential planning scholars provides a rich set of examples of how planning has made places better and a striking argument for the relevance of the progressive, egalitarian aims of what she calls the planning project.' - Susan Fainstein, Harvard University, USA 'What goes on in cities is crucial to the human condition and the future of our planet and there is much there that needs to be fixed - and urgently. This visionary, hopeful and pragmatic book offers a manifesto for liveable, sustainable cities for the many, not just the few, and an impassioned plea for the role of planning in achieving this' - Ash Amin, Durham University, UK 'A wonderful book and essential reading for anyone who wants to revitalise planning. Patsy Healey underlines the significance of inclusive thinking and deliberative practices in creating places that are more liveable and more sustainable.' - Maarten Hajer, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands 'A rich and inspiring read, written with authority, deep understanding and extraordinary clarity by one of the world's leading planning scholars.' - Alessandro Balducci, Politecnico di Milano, Italy 'Historically-informed and culturally-aware, this book sets out the challenges and opportunities for planning in the altered context of the twenty-first century. It is important reading for students and practitioners alike.' - Kevin Murray, Director, Kevin Murray Associates and Past President of the RTPI 'Essential reading for all those searching for a 21st Century introduction to the planning project' - Lee Pugalis, Urban Design 'Using case studies from four continents, [Healey] explores the many meanings that places can have ... and how planners can first perceive and then address these meanings. A useful survey for students in planning and urban studies. Recommended.' W.C Johnson, Choice
