Born into an average middle-class home near Detroit, Michigan, Madonna soon proved herself anything but typical. Her talent as a dancer earned her a scholarship to the University of Michigan. She soon left college, however, to seek stardom in New York City. After arriving in the city with just a few dollars in her pocket, Madonna became a singer in a rock band. When a DJ heard her demo tape, he sent it to a record company executive, who quickly signed her to a contract. Her first single, "Everybody," shot to the top of the dance charts.
