Living with Dementia

Veljko Dubljevic Ph.D.,D.Phil., is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Science, Technology and Society (STS) at North Carolina State University. Before arriving in Raleigh, he spent three years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Neuroethics Research Unit at IRCM and McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He studied philosophy (University of Novi Sad) and economics (Educons University), and obtained a PhD in political science (University of Belgrade). After that he joined the Research Training Group “Bioethics” at University of Tuebingen, and after studying philosophy, bioethics, and neuroscience, he obtained a doctorate in philosophy (University of Stuttgart). Veljko’s research focuses on ethics of neuroscience and technology, and neuroscience of ethics. He has over 50 publications in moral, legal and political philosophy and in neuroethics. He co-edited a volume at Oxford University Press (together with Fabrice Jotterand): Cognitive Enhancement: Ethical and Policy Implications in International Perspectives, and published a monograph Neuroethics, Justice and Autonomy: Public Reason in the Cognitive Enhancement Debate, in Springer Book Series “The International Library of Ethics, Law and Technology”. Dr. Frances Bottenberg holds an academic position as Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. She received her M.A. in Philosophy from Temple University and her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Stony Brook University. Bottenberg’s scholarly work aims to offer counter-perspectives on the nature and value of “unusual” minds and lived experience. Her publications include “Emotion as the Animation of Value”, “Searching for Alterity: What Can We Learn from Interviewing Humanoid Robots?” and "Judging Inappropriateness in Actions Expressing Emotion." In-progress work includes a survey chapter on ethical and social issues faced in dementia care for a clinical manual, as well as a monograph on the phenomenology of dementia. Bottenberg is also a founding member of Reimagining Dementia: A Creative Coalition for Justice, an international initiative aimed at improving the quality of life for people living with dementia.
