Beginning in the early years of the 20th century numerous surveys have been undertaken along the Nile valley southwards from Aswan. Reisner's work on the First Archaeological Survey of Nubia proved spectacularly successful and he formulated a cultural sequence from the A-Group in the 4th millennium BC into the recent past which has largely withstood the test of time.
