Granddaughter of a Welsh coal miner, Thelma Wheatley was born in Swansea and grew up in the Mumbles. She graduated from Aberystwyth University, then took a Master's Degree in English at York University, Toronto. She is an award-winning author of three books, one of which was inspired by her autistic son. And Neither Have I Wings to Fly, about the institutionalisation of the mentally handicapped in Canada, was shortlisted for the Wales Book of the Year Award, 2014, and also won Bronze Medal in Indie Awards. Thelma taught autistic children with special needs for many years in the Toronto area, and gave presentations on raising autistic children. She was a presenter on autism with AutismCymry, and gave talks in Swansea and Cardiff and at Aberystwyth University Theological College. She lives in Toronto, but also spends time in Swansea, in the Mumbles.
