Wuthnow, a noted sociologist of religion, tries to improve our understanding of kindness in American life, and how people became kind and caring. He examines a cross-section of young volunteers to see how habits are cultivated before adulthood, and paints a compelling picture of the role of families, mentors, and institutions in the moral life of teenagers. In doing so he sheds light on the true nature of voluntarism and moral education.
