It is a translation of Kitāb al-bādiya by al-Šayḫ Muḥamd al-Māmi, with an introduction that situates the book in its social and historical context. It explores the paradox of legal thought emerging in a saiba (anarchic) environment, where customary law is typically the norm for managing community affairs. It raises the issue of Islamic law, which is inherently urban, in a nomadic setting to which it is not adapted.
