Der Band behandelt in sieben großen Kapiteln die Geschichte des Christentums vom Spätmittelalter über die Reformation im deutschsprachigen Raum und in Europa, das Konfessionelle Zeitalter, das Zeitalter von Pietismus und Aufklärung, das »lange 19. Jahrhundert« und das »kurze 20. Jahrhundert«. Die Darstellung will vor allem die großen Zusammenhänge und Entwicklungslinien erschließen. Sie soll angehenden Pfarrerinnen und Pfarrern sowie Religionslehrerinnen und Religionslehrern ein historisch begründetes Verständnis jener Gestalt des Christentums eröffnen, mit der sie in ihrem Wirkungskreis aktuell zu tun haben.
