This short text is aimed at 'surgical postgraduates and any healthcare professional working in a surgical ITU'. The Authors state that it should be read in conjunction with the sister volume Surgical Critical Care. The book has a section devoted to multiple-choice questions and then a section devoted to possible viva voce questions. Each section is divided systematically and the answers are clear and concise. Answers are cross-referenced to the Surgical Critical Care text. The book competes in a hotly contested part of the market, with many other works of a similar type, and equivalent exercises can be completed on-line. One very much doubts whether it will appeal to anyone other than an MRCS candidate and in that regard the content seems well matched to the published examination syllabus.
