“Islam and Politics provides an accessible, detailed and critical overview of the rise and evolution of religious activism or political Islam. Peter Mandaville views Islamism in the context of domestic politics and globalization. A welcome comprehensive third edition.”Fawaz A. Gerges, London School of Economics, author of ISIS: A History “To say that this new edition of Islam and Politics is both sweeping and authoritative doesn‘t quite do it justice. What Peter Mandaville has done here is nothing short of remarkable. It‘s a big and brilliant book, panoramic in scope, and cutting across regions and themes almost effortlessly. The role that Islam plays in politics has become only more complex and controversial in recent years. And so a book like this isn‘t just important; it‘s indispensable for students and specialists alike – but also for really anyone who‘s interested in taking stock of the richness and diversity of Islamic thought and practice across the Muslim world. In fact, if you could only read one book on Islam and politics, it should probably be this one.”Shadi Hamid, Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution; author of Temptations of Power and Islamic Exceptionalism and co-editor of Rethinking Political Islam “In Islam and Politics, Peter Mandaville accomplishes an extraordinary feat: the book is nuanced and substantive yet accessible for introductory audiences. From questions about jihad and state-sponsored Islamist to the relationship between global processes and local politics, Mandaville’s clear-headed approach unpacks not only the phenomena of Islamist politics themselves, but also the powerful narratives about Islamism that themselves shape the direction of global politics.”Jillian Schwedler, Professor of Political Science at the City University of New York’s Hunter College and the Graduate Center “This work incisively examines a subject of intense public and policy interest. Ranging widely across issues and regions, Islam and Politics provides an unerring guide to Islamism and the impact of globalisation from above and protest from below. The analysis is always illuminating, the writing accessible and balanced.”James Piscatori, Professor of International Relations, Durham University, UK “Few people have the breadth, depth, and practical experience to write a book like this. Peter Mandaville ranges across the history, ideas, institutions, movements, and changing forms of Muslim politics without forcing them into a single story. Yet readers whose curiosity exceeds their prior knowledge will find the book remarkably accessible. It makes an enormously complicated subject clearer without pretending to make it simple.Nathan J. Brown, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, George Washington University”
