Modern computational tools enable sophisticated solutions to many robotics problems. However, using these tools traditionally requires students to be familiar with advanced concepts from probability theory, geometry, algorithms, and software engineering. This book is the first to present an introduction to robotics and perception for robots that exploits these new tools in a way that undergraduates with just a basic background can follow, while also teaching the theoretical foundations that underlie these tools and their use. Students are introduced to new concepts in context – each chapter is structured around an increasingly complex robotics system. Aiming to enable students to confidently construct large-scale robotics software solutions for real-world problems, the authors encourage hands-on learning. The GTSAM software library, used worldwide in academia and industry, is used extensively. Every section includes examples and figures produced by executable python code that can be incorporated by instructors into larger class projects, with example projects available online.

Frank Dellaert is Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he focuses on perception and planning for autonomous robot systems. He pioneered the use of several probabilistic methods in both computer vision and robotics, such as the Monte Carlo localization and factor graph optimization. From 2014 to 2018, Prof. Dellaert spent time at KU Leuven, Skydio, and Meta's Reality labs. He also worked at Google AI and was CTO at Verdant Robotics from 2022 to 2024. Seth Hutchinson is Professor at Northeastern University and Professor emeritus at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He was previously the Executive Director of the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines at Georgia Tech, where he was also Professor and KUKA Chair for Robotics in the School of Interactive Computing (2018–2024). Hutchinson has coauthored three books on robotics and served as president of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, amongst other distinctions.
