Introduction to Colloid and Surface Chemistry

Tommy Nylander is a full professor in Physical Chemistry at Lund University, Sweden. He completed is PhD at Lund University under the supervision of Kåre Larsson and did his postdoc at Applied Mathematics at Australian National University with Professor Barry Ninham. He has many years of experience in fundamental and applied research on Soft Matter, involving the self-assembly of lipids, proteins, polymers, and surfactants in bulk and at interfaces. He frequently uses neutron and X-ray methods to reveal the complex self-assembly behaviour and structure of these types of systems. Professor Nylander has served in several beam line committees at many of the leading neutron facilities. He has published 280 scientific articles and book chapters within soft matter self-assembly systems. He has extensive international collaboration both with academia and industry.Lars Nilsson is a professor in formulation technology Department of Process and Life Science Engineering at the Lund University, Sweden. He holds a PhD in food technology and specializes in areas such as surface and colloid chemistry, biopolymers, biopolymer characterization, protein formulation, emulsions, and foams, as well as field-flow fractionation. Nilsson has a strong publication history focusing on starch and its properties, particularly in the field of food. Karen J. Edler is Professor of Materials in the Centre for Analysis and Synthesis in the Department of Chemistry, Lund University, Sweden. Until 2022, she was Professor of Soft Matter in the Chemistry Department at the University of Bath, UK. After undergraduate BSc/LLB degrees at Sydney University, she graduated with a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the Australian National University (1998). She completed a postdoc at Cornell University before being appointed as a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellow at Bath in 2000, where she became Professor in 2014.Her research focuses on studying nano to macroscale structure formation in self assembling systems, containing amphiphiles, polymers and nanoparticles, characterised principally using scattering techniques. Recently, much of her work has focused on structure and assembly in deep eutectic solvents, polymer-lipid nanodiscs as membrane protein supports and the use of biobased materials in solution for rheology control and encapsulation. Understanding interactions between surfaces, nanoparticles, micelles, and polymers is central to control over structure and thus function. Her group uses time-resolved grazing incidence diffraction, X-ray & neutron reflectivity or small & wide-angle scattering to study interactions & structure, and a range of complementary characterisation techniques are applied to determine formation mechanisms & structures across many length scales. Extensive collaborations with other groups in industry & academia apply novel materials synthesised in her group to applications from drug delivery to membrane protein structural studies to nanomaterial catalysts and “green” formulations for personal care.
