Into the Canyon

For more than five decades, contemporary artist Jim Waid has remained deeply responsive to his environment, yet his vision of the American West resists the conventions of traditional landscape painting. Rather than privileging sweeping vistas or distant mountain peaks, Waid moves inward, into canyons, desert oases, and shaded pocket gardens, where intimacy and density replace vast spectacle. Guided by an improvisational process rooted in sustained observation, his paintings attend to cycles of growth and decay at close range: exposed tree roots, sunblasted canyon walls, decomposing saguaros, lichen-covered boulders, and fragile bursts of flowering life.
