Intellectual and Cultural Origins of Chaïm Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca’s New Rhetoric Project

Michelle Bolduc, Professor of Translation Studies at the University of Exeter, is an internationally recognized scholar of Translation Studies and Comparative Medieval Literature (French, Italian, Occitan). She has published extensively on the intersections of medieval literature, rhetoric, and translation, including two books, Translation and the Rediscovery of Rhetoric (2020) and The Medieval Poetics of Contraries (2006), and over 35 articles and translations. With David Frank, she is also at the forefront of bringing the work of Belgian philosophers Chaïm Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca into English, and her research comprises modern rhetoric – Perelman’s and Olbrechts-Tyteca’s New Rhetoric Project – and its translation.David Frank is professor emeritus of rhetoric and political communication in the Robert D. Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon, Eugene, OR, USA. The author and co-author of seven books and 50 journal articles, Professor Frank studies the use of argumentative reason (rhetoric) in value conflicts, including those between Israelis and Palestinians, South and North Koreans, and White and Black Americans. He has written extensively on Chaïm Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca’s New Rhetoric project, alone and in collaboration with Michelle Bolduc.
