Hungary was the home of the elite Hussar. These skilled, daring and flamboyant light cavalrymen were first drawn for Hapsburg service from what is now northern Croatia, Serbia, Slovakia and Hungary in the late 17th century. It was not long before most nations in Europe adopted both Hussar formations, uniform and equipment, notably France, Britain and Prussia. This title covers a dynamic and glamorous period, during which the Hussars were increasingly regulated within the Hapsburg army, and developments took place in clothing, weaponry and equipment, notably the introduction of short carbines and rifles. Dave Hollins was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1962. After graduating from University College London, he trained as a maritime solicitor and began his career in commercial shipping. He is a frequent contributor to specialist Napoleonic magazines and has written a number of books related to the Imperial Army and Archduke Charles. His previous work for Osprey includes Warrior 24 Austrian Grenadiers and Infantry 1788-1816. Darko Pavlovic was born in 1959 and currently lives and works in Zagreb, Croatia. A trained architect, he now works as a full-time illustrator and writer, specialising in militaria. Darko has illustrated a number of books for Osprey including Men-at-Arms 282: 'Axis Forces in Yugoslavia 1941-45' and Elite 60: 'U-Boat Crews 1914-45'. He has also written and illustrated titles for the Men-at-Arms series on the Austrian army of the 19th century.
