“Great teaching takes creativity, professional judgment and the autonomy to make decisions about what works best for students. David Sherrin gives educators practical tools to bring social studies to life, spark students' curiosity and help them think critically. At a time when these skills matter more than ever, this book offers teachers ideas they can implement in their classrooms.”- Randi Weingarten, President, American Federation of Teachers"David's teaching effortlessly moves between the humor and self-deprecation of a Catskill comedian and the moral seriousness and thoughtfulness of a sage. David doesn't so much teach as he directs and produces a classroom, casting students in a vivid world of difficult choices and dramatic action and offers them a stage to reimagine who they could become in their own lives. Spending a day in his classroom was always awe-inducing and watching students do a full semester with David was a spiritual experience. I will refer anyone interested in becoming a social studies teacher -- and many who aren't -- to this book. The many jobs of teaching he outlines are what makes teaching so difficult but also so fun and such a transferable skillset for anyone interested in doing just about anything.”– Daniel Marshall, former social studies teacher and founder of Sand Mountain Cooperative Education Center“I highly recommend this book! It is a fantastic how-to guide on being a social studies teacher and will be a great resource for new and current social studies teachers across the United States and around the world.”– John Shekitka, Assistant Professor, Social Studies Education, Manhattanville University"After reading David Sherrin's book on authentic assessments, I can confirm that his writing style and down-to-earth teaching advice will have you wishing he was either your high school teacher, your wrestling coach, or your college professor. The best practices of a Social Studies teacher are within this book."- Ben Mazzola, graduate student in social studies education at SUNY Albany“"For those of us who find the multifaceted nature of our work daunting as well as exciting, in this new book David Sherrin offers a rare balance of inspiration, rigorous pedagogical insight, and practical application, all with a little humor. This book is a gift to new teachers– to be referred to often as a useful guide and source of support, as well as an encouraging reminder of all we aim to be as we bring his expansive vision of a social studies teacher to life!"- Jessica Meredith, 2nd year teacher at Maple Grove Jr./Sr. High School, Bemus Point, NY
