Hitler sends his aide Karl Hartmann on a mission to the future to bring back the knowhow required to build nuclear weapons. However, when Hartmann returns to report his findings, including Hitler’s suicide in 1945, Hitler decides to escape to the future to avoid his historic fate. Whilst preparing for his leader's departure, Hartmann succumbs to temptation by secretly travelling to the future to enjoy a few days away from the War. Here he meets and falls in love with Linde Engel, but is then faced with the dilemma whether to stay with the woman he loves or return to assist Hitler in his planned escape. Being a slave to honour and duty he chooses to return to assist his leader, against Linde’s desperate pleas and the realisation that, on Hitler's departure in the time machine, he will never be able to return to the future to see his beloved Linde again.

But a few days after Hartmann’s return to 1944, Hitler also returns from the future under the most mysterious of circumstances, and left with no other option, he is compelled to fight the War to its bitter conclusion. After witnessing his leader's suicide in the final days of the War, Hartmann escapes from the besieged Berlin bunker, only to be captured by the advancing Russians. He is confined to a temporary camp for disarmed enemy combatants, where he endures horrific treatment until the camp is finally disbanded. Hartmann manages to escape the fate that awaits his fellow inmates and over the next few years, throws himself into the task of helping to rebuild post-war Germany.

Many years pass until one day Hartmann realises that the day when he left Linde in the future has now come around to being the present. Having never stopped loving her, he returns to the scene where he left her fifteen years ago. He confronts his younger self in an attempt to stop him from returning to the past but the young Hartmann will not heed his warning and returns to 1944 to complete the cycle. Hartmann tells Linde about his travails on his return to the past after leaving her that day. Linde is overjoyed to learn that his love for her remained undiminished and despite the fact that he was now fifteen years older, they are at last reunited.

Many years later, Hartmann approaches news editor Morgen Schreiber to tell his story. Together they track down Hitler who has arrived in their time and has assumed a new identity after travelling from the past. There follows a tortuous series of misadventures as Hartmann and Schreiber negotiate the intricacies of time travel in their mission to return Hitler to the historical past where he belongs. They finally succeed in their quest, but Hartmann is loath to reveal the secret of the time machine to the world, fearing it could destroy the fabric of civilized society if it should fall into the wrong hands, and he eventually takes it far from the reach of those who would misuse its powers.
