This volume in the "Historical Dictionaries” series expands on previous iterations, which covered both ancient and medieval Nubia, to focus primarily on prehistoric and ancient times. Lobban, an Africanist anthropologist who has published extensively on this topic, thus centers this text "on the millennia of early humans along the Nile in the prehistoric Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic eras and written periods of Egyptian pharaonic interactions and the Kerma, Napatan, Meroitic, and X-Group civilizations" (p. xi). There is an extensive bibliography and 12 appendixes.... Also included are several maps of the Nile valley (line maps of the cataract areas) and a chronology. Recommended.
