"Shore draws on his groundbreaking work building trust within the health care industry to argue convincingly for breaking down barriers to information sharing, adopting open innovation, and for the stakeholders to clearly align themselves in pursuit of improved patient outcomes. High Stakes is an important read for any health care stakeholder with a future." -- Vidar Jorgensen, Chairman, World Health Care Congress"I have admired David Shore's work for many years, and he has never disappointed. He has tackled the often underappreciated role of stakeholder alignment and has given us much to think about and much to work with. Must reading for anyone in or aspiring to a leadership role." -- Ed Reilly, President and Chief Executive Officer, American Management Association"High Stakes offers the 21st-century approach of how we ought to address challenges in advancing health. The foundation of stakeholder theory should serve everyone in this complex environment with practical evidence and ethically based ideas. As stakeholder engagement is a key ingredient for success, the author's cogent book built upon a quarter century of experience, should benefit all in multiple leadership levels and sectors in the new practice of'health diplomacy.' Shore and Kupferberg's compelling approach presents opportunities worth adapting and implementing posthaste." -- Scott C. Ratzan, MD, MPA, Vice President, Global Health, Johnson & Johnson;and Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Health Communication: International Perspectives"David Shore cogently writes about the importance of 'walking in someone else's shoes' before attempting collaboration or trying to resolve controversial matters. His prescription gives business and political leaders a road map for changing the tone of their dialogue and increasing their effectiveness." -- Karen Ignagni, President and Chief Executive Officer, America's Health Insurance Plans"High Stakes is that rare blend of a great mystery novel and a rigorous academic work. The authors take the reader on a creative and exhilarating ride through health care and other worlds, exploring concepts as seemingly diverse as the Gordian knot, the tragedy of the commons the roots of the burning platform and trust. Drawing from highly successful programs such as 'The Forces of Change,' the authors begin to tie together these seemingly diversethreads through compelling case vignettes expressed in an eloquent and elegant way. At the 'mystery's' end, the authors weave the characters, events, and lessons into a compelling dénouement. Case closed: We needto try something completely different; focusing on the stakeholders in health care is not only desirable but necessary." -- Gray Ellrodt, MD, Chief Quality Officer and Chair of Medicine, Berkshire Medical Center and Professor of Medicine, University of Massachusetts School of Medicine"Shore and Kupferberg offer health care teams a lifeline in this book. Stakeholder theory and understanding the need for partnership are critical elements in the future sustainability of our health care system. This writing gives practical examples that readers can put into motion immediately in their work environments to not only survive, but thrive in the current challenging world of healthcare." -- Trisha Cassidy, Senior Vice President of System Developmentand Strategy, Loyola University Health System"This book is unique in its focus on the analysis of the stakeholders and on how all the healthcare stakeholders' groups compete and are not encouraged to align. This is a very different approach to encouraging new health policies. The book is effective in keeping readers' attention and presenting challenging new thinking." --Doody's
