Beskrivning
This unique edited volume provides a comprehensive exploration of haunted and ghost tourism within the Global South. Combining interdisciplinary perspectives, it develops a conceptual framework for understanding how paranormal tourism is shaped by distinct cultural, historical, and socio-economic contexts across regions including Asia, Africa, and Latin America and brings to the forefront voices and case studies that have previously been underrepresented. The volume critically examines how sites associated with death, trauma, and the supernatural are constructed, interpreted, and commodified in diverse cultural settings. It explores the role of local belief systems, oral traditions, and historical memory in shaping tourist motivations, while also addressing the influence of media and global tourism flows. Particular focus is given to the intersections between ghost tourism and cultural heritage, highlighting how narratives of haunting are embedded in community identity and postcolonial histories. Structured around thematic sections, the book integrates theoretical discussions with grounded case studies, illustrating the variability and complexity of haunted tourism practices across the Global South. It also engages with ethical considerations, including the commodification of suffering, cultural sensitivity, and the responsibilities of tourism stakeholders. By situating ghost tourism within broader debates on sustainability, development, and heritage, this volume offers critical insights into its economic potential for local communities. This is an essential resource for scholars, students, and practitioners seeking to understand the dynamics, implications, and future trajectories of ghost tourism in the Global South.
