Beskrivning
Scientific and technological advancements are leading to developments and innovations in space exploration. Space travel requires the development of materials that can withstand unique and demanding requirements. Handbook of Space Materials: Protective Materials, Coatings, and Optical Systems establishes the essential groundwork for all space-bound hardware by confronting the harsh realities of the space environment.• Opens with a rigorous dissection of the space environment before progressing to targeted mitigation strategies.• Covers radiation-resistant cobalt-free high-entropy alloys and advanced shielding architectures.• Discusses tribological solutions including laser-clad anti-wear lubrication coatings, high-temperature self-lubricating materials, and high-fracture-toughness gradient coatings designed for decades of reliable operation.• Concludes with a deep dive into mission-critical optical systems, from vacuum ultraviolet optics and infrared remote sensing coatings to debris-impact-resistant transparent windows, ensuring the integrity of both spacecraft structure and sensory payloads. This definitive reference is aimed at advanced students, researchers, and engineers engaged in astronautical projects. Written by experts from across the disciplines of materials, mechanical, aerospace, and related fields of engineering, it provides readers with a broad understanding of the current and near future materials technologies that will propel space travel and missions forward.
