Gods and Mortals

This is an anthology of twentieth-century poetyr based on classical myths. The book brings together over three hundred poems offering modern and contemporary interpretations of the ancient stories. By presenting a new picture of Greek myths, this volume celebrates the presence of classical mythology in the consciousness of twentieth-century poets and proves that the classical tradition is as alive as ever and continues to be reinvented with every successive generation of poets. The book offers poems by such internationally famous poets as Auden, Yeats, Valery, Cavafy, Rilke, Akhmatova, and Mandelshtam, alonside works by contemporary poets writing in almost every European language. the inclusion of poems from Bengali and Chinese suggest that the continuing influence of Greek myth is not limited to the Western literary tradition.
