Despite a frustrated ecclesiastical career, Giraldus Cambrensis (Gerald of Wales, c.1146–1220/23) composed many literary works, including in volume 8 this moral treatise criticising the Angevin court. Giving a vivid picture of contemporary politics, the Latin text, with an editorial preface in English, was published in the Rolls Series in 1891.
