Futures of Work

The future of work will not simply be determined by rapid technological change. Work's future is also being shaped by four other crises: climate change, the care crunch, crises of inequality and rising authoritarianism. Futures of Work provides an accessible introduction to how work and workers worldwide are being affected by these five interacting crises.With one chapter devoted to each crisis, the book summarizes recent trends and the forces at work, zooming in particularly on what workers and their supporters are doing, and could do, to push for fairer and worker-friendlier outcomes. The crises are global in scope, and the book's arguments are accordingly bolstered by evidence from around the world, including the United States and Europe but also Asia and the Pacific, Africa, and Latin America. The title Futures of Work—plural—signals Tilly's contention that the future of work is not set in stone, and the choices all of us make will ultimately determine that future.
