This book is concerned with frequency in foreignlanguage learning, and in particular withcontrastive frequency across languages. Thefocus is on the learning of English and Italian,whether it be English speakers learning Italianor Italian speakers learning English. Despitethe fact that frequency – whether it be oflemmas or of word forms within specific lexicogrammaticalenvironments – lies at theheart of L2 learning, it is not stressed in anysalient or consistent manner in English / Italianlanguage-learning materials. This work aimsto redress the balance, offering a corpusassistedcritical analysis of the way frequencyis handled in English and Italian dictionaries,and bringing out unexpected differencesbetween the two languages.
