While author Mark Tyler Watts sleeps, a creature from his folklore writings comes to life and creeps out into the world. The cannibalistic Atahsaia attacks and horrifically butchers two women in the small town of Monaton. By the time Watts realizes what has happened, more creatures have been let loose, all seeking flesh and destruction.

Partnering with spiritualist Victor "Vic" Marzio, Watts seeks out the creatures to put them back where they belong: nightmares, whispers, and campfire tales. Yet despite destroying the source of the scourge - his own written work - the creatures continue to make their presence known. Soon the author's best friend is attacked, and Watts begins to wonder if they can fix the catastrophe his cursed writing has released upon us all.
