Evie Harris spent the past four years consumed with grief. When Harry Houdini requests her father's help to locate a missing stage performer, Evie buries her grief to go undercover and find the missing Flora Thompson. 

She cuts her long hair into a modern bob, lines her eyes with kohl, and gets a job as the newest assistant in a vaudeville magic act. Evie must learn the ropes of the stage while investigating her fellow performers. Soon, she discovers that illusion and misdirection exist not only in magic but also behind the scenes. Evie follows the clues through the twists and turns of bootlegging and vaudeville for a final confrontation with a killer.
