Exotic, Dissonant, and Dark Heritage and Tourism: Past, Present and Future Horizons

In recent decades, dark tourism—also known as thanatourism—has sparked intense academic debate that extends well beyond the field of tourism research. The concept has captivated the attention of the social sciences and journalism alike. Thanatourism (from the Greek word Thanatos, meaning death) refers to travel to sites associated with mass death, suffering, disaster, or the macabre. These locations present a unique form of dissonant heritage that challenges future generations to reflect. This book is a curated literature overview that aims to provide meaningful answers to the questions of what dark tourism is and what motivates visitors to these sites. The auto-summaries have been generated by a recursive clustering algorithm via the Dimensions Auto-summarizer by Digital Science handled by Subject Matter Experts and the author of this book. The author of this book selected which SN content should be auto-summarized and decided its order of appearance. Please be aware that these are abstractive auto-summaries, which consist of original sentences, but are not representative of its original paper, since we do not show the full length of the publication. Please note that only published SN content is represented here, and that curated books are still at an experimental stage.
