Evidence-Based Imaging

Dr. Santiago Medina joined Miami Children's Hospital as a neuroradiologist and pediatric radiologist in 1999 . He received his medical degree from the Institute of Health Sciences, CES University in Colombia and a master’s degree in public health and health care management from Harvard School of Public Health, Massachusetts. Dr. Medina’s medical training includes a medical and surgical internship in Medellin General Hospital, Colombia, and a radiology residency at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology - Washington University Medical Center in Missouri, as well as a pediatric radiology fellowship and a neuroradiology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital and affiliated Harvard Medical School Hospitals in Massachusetts. Dr. Santiago Medina is co-founder and director of MCH’s Health Outcomes, Policy and Economics (HOPE) Center and co-director of the Division of Neuroradiology in the Department of Radiology. He is a member of several professional committees and gives multiple lectures on evidence-based medicine and central nervous system imaging . Dr. Santiago Medina has published numerous articles in national and international peer review journals . He is bi-lingual in English and Spanish.

From the reviews: Radiology 2008 " ...All radiologists will benefit from this important work ... This text clearly presents the imaging approaches that are best supported by the evidence. The thoughtful analysis and detailed references will be of benefit to an academic radiologist investigating a particular issue. It will also be of great use to a general radiologist when presented with the question of what is the most effective test to be performed in a particular patient." (Robert A. Halvorsen, Jr, MD; Radiology: Volume 247: Number 2 - May 2008) "Evidence-based Imaging presents the radiologist and clinician with a user friendly guide to evidence-based science and the merit behind the diagnostic imaging studies performed in medicine. The 30 chapters cover the most prevalent diseases in developed countries, including the major causes of mortality and morbidity, ie injury, coronary artery disease, cancer and cerebrovascular disease. Most chapters have been written by radiologists in close collaboration with clinical physicians and surgeons to provide a balanced and fair analysis of the different medical topics. To make the book user friendly and to enable fast access to pertinent information, the authors have organised all of the chapters in the same format. The chapters are framed around important and provocative clinical questions relevant to a physician's daily practice. Key points and summarised answers to the important clinical issues are at the beginning of the chapters so that the busy clinician can understand the most important evidence-based imaging data in seconds. By offering a clear understanding of the science behind the evidence, the book fills a void for radiologists, clinicians and others with an interest in medical imaging and a desire to implement an evidence-based approach. I heartly recommend this test to everyone with aspirations to improve their delivery of medical care to patients in the 21st century." Reviewed by Dr T Featherstone, Consultant Radiologist, Sunderland Royal Hospital. RAD Magazine, Nov.06 "A user-friendly guide to evidence-based science and the merit behind the diagnostic imaging studies performed in medicine. This book gives the reader a clinically relevant overview of epidemiology, selection of subjects for imaging, selection of imaging strategies, imaging test performance and cost, cost-effectiveness analysis, and applicability to children. ... The vast amount of evidence-based literature found in this text is extremely interesting and useful." (The Neuroradiology Journal, Vol. 19 (3), 2006) "Drs. Medina and Blackmore have assembled a large number of imaging and clinical experts to produce this volume. ... Tables summarizing the key literature and suggested imaging algorithms allow one to gain a quick understanding of the issues. Illustrative imaging case studies are presented to highlight the text discussions. ... This is very readable, very practical book for both clinicians and images. ... Overall grade Excellent." (B. D. Coley, Pediatric Radiology, Vol. 37, 2007) "This work is unique not only in the approach to the subject matter but also in the potential range of readers. ... the potential readers of the work span the gamut from those interested in the field of evidence-based or effectiveness research in radiology to the radiologist seeking a quick reference on how to approach a specific clinical problem. ... this book is a significant addition to the radiology literature. ... Many of us may be referring to this book ... ." (American Journal of Neuroradiology, June/July, 2007) "An excellent introduction to the principles of evidence-based medicine and to critically understanding error and bias in medical literature. ... The book succeeds in clearly presenting the status of evidence-based imaging and the numerous areas in which evidence is insufficient. I highly recommend this book ... . Finally, all medical libraries and medical schools will need a copy of the book ... ." (Richard R. Abello, The Journal of Nuclear Medicine, Vol. 48 (4), April, 2007)
