Brian Douglas is an Anglican priest of the Anglican Church of Australia and a Research Professor in the Centre for Religion, Ethics and Society at the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture, Charles Sturt University, Canberra, Australia. His research interests are Anglican eucharistic theology and Anglican studies. Brian is the Editor of the Journal of Anglican Studies (A Cambridge University Press Journal). His recent book publications include: Herbert Thorndike and the Restoration of the Church of England (Brill, 2025); Sacramental Poetics in Richard Hooker and George Herbert: Exploring the Abundance of God (Fortress/Lexington, 2022) and The Anglican Eucharist in Australia: The History, Theology and Liturgy of the Eucharist in the Anglican Church of Australia (Brill, 2021).

This meticulous analysis of the realist Scottish Episcopal eucharistic tradition challenges three assumptions: the Scottish Reformation as simply Protestant and Presbyterian, Anglican liturgy as circumscribed by the 1662 BCP, and Anglicanism as necessarily built on privilege. Here, baptismal ecclesiology is inadequate for Anglican unity: communion is crucial. Such a comprehensive study is long overdue, and indispensable for students of Anglicanism.
