Jennifer Mateer is Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of British Columbia in the Department of Geography, while also lecturing in the Department of Geography at the University of Victoria, Canada. Martin Locret-Collet is Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Birmingham and works as a Research Associate for the Liveable Cities Project. Simon Springer is Professor of Human Geography, Head of Discipline for Geography and Environmental Studies, and Director of the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Maleea Acker is Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Victoria, Canada.

Energies Beyond the State is a compendium of 10 chapters addressing broad issues, such as an anarchist ecology of environmental displacement and the international impact of capital and more specific issues, such as those relating to uranium and dams. Editors Mateer, Springer, Locret-Collet, and Acker include thought-provoking, relatively radical anarchist/neo-Marxist perspectives regarding environmental problems and potential solutions to those problems. The volume also introduces and applies a novel perspective, the TORSO (TerritOry-Resources-Societal Organization) framework, to analyze various environmental problem areas.
