Emotions in Non-Fictional Representations of the Individual, 1600-1850

This book addresses the distinct representationsof emotions in non-fictionaltextsfrom the seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century (1600-1850). Focusing onmemoirs, autobiographies, correspondencesand conductmanuals, it argues that inthosewritings, passions and emotionsaredifferently expressed than in fiction. It alsooffers a comparativestudy oftexts from cultures as diverse as English, French, Korean and Chinese, andof emotions in relation to genre, identity, and moralityduring significant cultural transformation of the early modern period.
