Mer information
Rowland Atkinson is Chair in Inclusive Societies at the University of Sheffield. His work focuses on the broad political consequences and spatial form of social inequalities. This has included research on household displacement from gentrification, and the rise of gated communities and ‘fortress’ homes. His concern with social problems and housing issues in urban settings has increasingly taken him into the spaces, and identification of processes, through which power and inequality are shaped, including illicit investment in property. This identification of a relationship between social affluence and exclusion has generated an extensive body of work concerned with the nature of wealth, and impact of the wealthy on cities. Mikael Holmqvist is Professor of Business Administration and Associate Professor of Sociology at Stockholm University. His research focuses broadly on work, organisation and society, latterly with a particular emphasis on economic and political elites. He has compiled extensive ethnographies of Sweden’s prime elite community and its foremost elite business school, examining how such elite spaces contribute to the reproduction and consecration of a national power elite.
Recensioner i media
While the economic processes of contemporary inequality have been extensively documented, the physical spaces through which inequality is (re)produced remain dangerously underexamined. Elite Spaces offers a vital and original account of the buildings, neighbourhoods, cities, infrastructures, and regions through which wealth elites consolidate privilege, reproduce power, and extend their socio-spatial reach. This book makes visible a physical architecture of inequality that has too often remained hidden and beyond scrutiny. Wide-ranging and thought-provoking, this impressive collection is an important resource for those seeking to understand—and challenge—elite power.
