Ecology of Disadvantage

The Ecology of Disadvantage explores how Jamaica's early childhood development is shaped by the stability of children's environments. Though the early years are optimal for growth, they are also when biological and psychosocial risks, such as poor maternal health, poverty, violence, neglect and inadequate parenting, can derail development. Grounded in Urie Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory, the book underscores the need for stability across home, school and community. Resilience, it argues, cannot be assumed but must be actively nurtured through supportive families, responsive schools, trained teachers, accessible interventions and strong social services. Across seven chapters, Kinkead-Clark examines the history of Jamaica's early childhood sector, the adverse experiences that disable healthy development, the particular struggles of children at risk and those living with disabilities, the status and practices of the teachers who staff early childhood classrooms and the parenting and family dynamics that frame children's lives. Throughout, she keeps equity at the centre, asking how every child, not only the fortunate few, might reap the benefits of high-quality early care and education.Far from a counsel of despair, this is a call to collective action. Kinkead-Clark offers cohesive, sustainable strategies for strengthening the systems within children's ecologies, insisting that every Jamaican child deserves a fair chance to thrive.
