Echoes of Discovery

Istvan Hargittai is an Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He was born in Budapest in 1941, and his early life was marked by immense hardship. His father was killed in a slave labor camp when Istvan was only one. At age three, he, his mother, and his brother were deported to a Nazi camp. In socialist Hungary, he had to overcome obstacles that hindered his pursuit of an education, both in high school and at university. Prof. Hargittai earned a master’s degree in chemistry from Moscow Lomonosov University in 1965 and has since had a distinguished professional career, working for the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He has also conducted research and taught internationally, particularly in Norway and the United States. He is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Academia Europaea (London), and the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (Oslo). He holds a Ph.D. and a D.Sc. from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, along with honorary doctorates (Dr.h.c.) from Moscow Lomonosov University, the University of North Carolina, and the Russian Academy of Sciences.Magdolna Hargittai is a research professor of structural chemistry at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. She holds a Ph.D. and a D.Sc. from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a Dr. h.c. from the University of North Carolina. She is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Academia Europaea (London), and the European Academy of Sciences (Brussels). In 2011, she received the Distinguished Women in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering IUPAC Award. Most of her professional career, she worked for the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In addition to her work in structural chemistry, she has researched and taught on the lives and careers of women scientists.
