The post-Cold War global order has unravelled. Liberal values and institutions are in full retreat, while authoritarians everywhere are emboldened. Bobo Lo is an independent international relations analyst and a Non-resident Fellow at the Lowy Institute in Sydney, Australia. He was formerly Head of the Russia and Eurasia Programme at Chatham House and Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Moscow. Dr Lo has written many well-received books and articles. His Axis of Convenience: Moscow, Beijing and the New Geopolitics (2008) was highlighted in Foreign Affairs as ‘the best analysis yet of one of the world’s most important bilateral relationships’. The Economist called his Russia and the New World Disorder (2015) ‘the best attempt yet to explain Russia’s unhappy relationship with the rest of the world’ while Foreign Affairs described Dr Lo as ‘one of the most balanced and insightful Western students of Russian foreign policy … with a special gift for recognizing the complexities of Russia’s engagement with the rest of the world’. His latest book is The Disorderly Society: Rethinking Global Governance in an Age of Anarchy (Edinburgh University Press, 2026.
