"Much of the research on digital transport platforms (e.g., ridehailing or dockless vehicles) has focused on developed countries, overlooking the different and vital context of SE Asia’s metropolises. This book closes that gap. Professors Kato and Chalermpong forge new ground, bringing together expert views and the best research on digital transport platforms in Southeast Asia. The chapters in this book explore the unique aspects of Southeast Asian cities – a history of informal and lightly motorized transportation, rapid adoption of the automobile coincident with ambitious public transit projects, high density cities, and high smart phone penetration – while also studying general issues of regulation, travel choices, and interactions with the broader transportation system. The rich case studies, in Bangkok, Hanoi, Jakarta, Manila, Phnom Penh, provide the most extensive overview of digital transport use available today. The authors summarize the region’s best research on the topic, giving new insights into the role of on-demand shared rides for Southeast Asia and, by extension, cities worldwide. This is a must-read for anyone interested in transportation and urbanization in Southeast Asia or in the rise of smart phone connectivity and on-demand transportation."Prof. Marlon Boarnet, Director, METRANS Transportation Center, USC Sol Price School of Public Policy, University of Southern California, USA"Led by a diverse Asia, RHA explores how it will evolve in the coming AI era. It is a must-read for professionals, students, and government officials."Prof. Akimasa Fujiwara, Graduate School of Advanced Science and Engineering, Hiroshima University, Japan
