’By focusing on the challenges facing the East Asian nations in the new millennium, this book makes an important contribution to our understanding of how economic development and social policies can be harmonized to promote the welfare of all. It deserves to be widely read.’ James Midgley, Specht Professor of Public Social Services and Dean of the School of Social Welfare, University of California, Berkeley, USA ’The book outlines, in a refreshingly useful manner, the social mosaic of Southeast Asia. It includes chapters on politics, civil society, globalization, the economy, gender, and social policy. Some authors outline the challenges facing the region as a whole. Others focus on individual countries or territories. All share a common concern about the future well being of the region.’ Glenn Drover, Dalhousie University, Canada
