Beskrivning
Highlighting how the resilience of children can be nurtured and grown within and by the community, this book focuses on the essential contribution that the voluntary sector plays and the need for positive partnership with the statutory sector to support vulnerable children.Recognising children as survivors rather than merely victims, this book credits their resilience. It begins with chapters by academics and practitioners on policy and practice, exploring the dimensions of vulnerability in work with vulnerable children. It then turns to responses to vulnerability, giving greater prominence to the voluntary sector’s role in work with vulnerable children, highlighting its unique perspective and degree of commitment, while emphasising the importance of partnership between the statutory and voluntary sectors. Reflecting the Editors’ conviction that the role played by Voluntary Sector Organisations (VSO) has received insufficient attention, the third part profiles a small number of organisations, who work to address gaps in existing provision and/or develop innovative ways of working with vulnerable children, including those who have offended and/or been victims of crime, those 'looked after' by the State, those born into disadvantaged circumstances such as poverty and those with mental health illnesses and disabilities. This book will appeal to academics and students studying across many disciplines, including sociology, criminology, social work, health and psychology.

Anthony Goodman is Professor of Community Justice at Middlesex University and is a former probation officer. His most recent research is on the work of a London borough to limit youth violence in a high crime area and has highlighted the importance of collaboration between the statutory and voluntary sectors. He has evaluated two projects on diversion of young offenders from custody; and working with domestic abusers and victim-survivors in minoritised communities; prior to these he evaluated a European funded project designed to empower young people to prevent sexual harassment and violence against girls in secondary schools in Italy, Sweden and Romania.David Porteous was Associate Professor in Criminology at Middlesex University until 2023, having previously worked in applied social research at the University of Bedfordshire and Leeds Metropolitan University. His work has mostly focused on youth justice policy and practice. This has included researching voluntary sector initiatives such as mentoring schemes and trauma-informed interventions. His most recent research, in conjunction with Prof. Anthony Goodman, examined the contribution which young people with lived experience of the youth justice system can make to work with children currently in the system. Though now happily retired from paid work (aka wage slavery), David retains an honorary position within the School of Law and Social Sciences and still co-edits (with Dr Timi Osidipe) the ‘Safer Communities’ journal. David has been the trustee of a charity which works with survivors of domestic abuse for the past ten years and currently volunteers as a drop-in advisor with another charity that supports asylum seekers and refugees.

'As a small, specialist charity, we welcome this publication, in particular its exploration of the complexity we face as the commissioning and practice landscape becomes ever more challenging due to limited resources and policy imperatives. We also recognise the conflict when working with young people who are both perpetrators and victims and the role of resilience in supporting children and young people affected by criminal and sexual exploitation, as they navigate pathways out of their situation. This book contains helpful evidence to support our ongoing focus on securing a sustainable future, whilst reflecting upon our practice focus in helping young people make alternative and positive choices.'Fiona Factor, Chair, Link to Change.'Social harms, inequalities and injustices can have a negative impact on children's healthy growth and development. Systems and processes that children encounter can be overly deficit-based and risk-averse, with insufficient focus on their strengths. This may include a tendency to overlook children's narratives of overcoming adversity, building resilience, and thriving in the face of challenges. This book highlights the importance of championing and amplifying children's voices and perspectives, while acknowledging their lived experiences of accessing and navigating systems. Crucially, it emphasises a relational, participatory approach that values children's experiential knowledge and expertise. It is essential that children not only receive support to help them heal from such adversity but also have access to services and positive role models that enable them to thrive within their communities. It is within this context that this book, edited by Anthony Goodman and David Porteous, makes an important and timely contribution to the field. It will be essential reading for students, academics, and practitioners interested in helping children heal and thrive within society, as well as understanding the benefits and challenges of partnership working between statutory and voluntary agencies, children, and their supporters.'Sean Creaney, Senior Lecturer in Criminal Justice at Edge Hill University.
