Des Pawson has a worldwide reputation as a rope worker, teaching and demonstrating his skills at boat shows, festivals, museums and galleries at home and abroad. In 1982 he co-founded the International Guild of Knot Tyers, and in 1996 he opened The Museum of Knots and Sailors' Ropework. In 2007 he was awarded an MBE for his services to the knot and rope industry.

Fishing News (December 2009) 'Des gives step-by-step instructions on how to put these knots together...just as you would expect from a recipe book...and guidance as to how each project can be the starting point for many other items.' Practical Boat Owner (March 2010) 'Most knot enthusiasts aboard smacks and barges sneakily keep one of Des's books in their bunk...but owners of modern yachts will also warm to the knotty problems unlaced by Des, with useful and innovative applications of ropework.' Yachting Monthly (March 2010) 'With this book to hand, readers will have the confidence to start making desirable ojects with knots...Definitely a book to either pore over at home or to keep on the boat.' Canals & Rivers (March 2010) 'Find projects ranging from fenders and mats to knife lanyards and belts along with background to many more projects.' Boat Mart (June 2010) 'opening windows into a craft unbeknown to many. While almost everyone must have tied a knot from time to time, this book takes the reader into a different and unusual world of knots.' Nautical Magazine (May 2010) 'Des Pawson has dedicated these 96 pages to ambitious ropework, unlikely to be found in many other books. All are works of art with a practical purpose and some, such as rope fenders, could save you money.' Yachting Monthly (May 2011) "This shows the author as the quintessential English eccentric. Described as the "guru of knot tying", he is certainly different and this is what gives this book its abundant charm...An amazingly eclectic collection of useful, useless and often very attractive examples of ropework is clearly described."
