Anthoula Malkopoulou is Associate Professor of Political Theory in the Department of Government at Uppsala University. Previously a Fellow at Princeton University and the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Studies, her research focuses on how democracies respond to internal threats, as well as on democratic institutions more broadly. She is co-editor of Militant Democracy and Its Critics (2019) and Equal Representation (2016), and author of The History of Compulsory Voting in Europe (2015). In 2022, she received the York Political Theory Manuscript Workshop Award for an earlier version of the manuscript on which this book is based.
