Available for the first time in English, this volume by the preeminent theorist Rached Ghannouchi examines the concepts of democracy and human rights from an Islamic perspective. Drawing on over 50 years of writing and practice, Ghannouchi introduces the framework of “democratic Islam” as an alternative to other interpretations of Islam that either seek to impose a historical understanding of Islam without adaptation to contemporary contexts or dismiss the relevance of Islamic teachings. Rached Ghannouchi is one of the most prominent Islamic thinkers worldwide and co-founder of the Ennahdha Party in Tunisia, a Muslim Democratic party founded in 1981. As both a political philosopher and politician, his writings cover both the theory and practice of Islamic political thought. He has written numerous works on a wide range of contemporary political issues, including democracy, secularism, the civic state, civil society, modernity, religion and pluralism, Islam and the West, human rights, the rights of women, the role of minorities, coexistence between faiths, and political developments in the Arab and Muslim worlds. Since the early 1980's, Ghannouchi has been an advocate of the compatibility between Islam and the principles of pluralism, freedom, modernity, and democratic governance. His works have been translated into several languages around the world. Mr. Ghannouchi was elected speaker of the Tunisian Parliament in 2019. In 2012, he was named one of Time's 100 MostInfluential People in the World and was awarded the Chatham House Prize (alongside Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki) for “the successful compromises each achieved during Tunisia's democratic transition”. He was also named one of Foreign Policy's Top 100 Global Thinkers and received the International Crisis Group Founder's Prize in 2015 and the Jamnalal Bajaj International Award for Promoting Gandhian Values Outside India in recognition of his role in Tunisia's democratic transition and for using non-violent, conciliatory approaches to resolve conflicts.
