D. H. Lawrence and Censorship

This book is the first monograph to cover the subject of D. H. Lawrence and censorship in its entirety. It examines Lawrence’s experiences of censorship throughout his career, from his earliest experiences of editorial bowdlerization to the end of his life, drawing attention to under-researched instances of censorship such as the 1922 prosecution of Women in Love. It considers how Lawrence resisted censorship through his use of private publication, as well as the ways in which censorship continued to shape Lawrence’s work and reputation after his death.
